UNION COUNTY AND HONEYWELL EXPLORE NEW APPROACHES TO GREEN INSTRUCTION FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHERS
Third Annual Green Boot Camp Combines Educational Expertise with Industry Experience in a Hands-On Learning Environment
UNION COUNTY, N.J., and MINNEAPOLIS, July 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Union County and Honeywell (NYSE: HON) this week are hosting the third annual Green Boot Camp, an interactive workshop focused on best practice instruction methods for teaching energy, sustainability and environmental concepts.
As part of the five-day event, 40 middle school teachers from across North America have gathered to explore the roots of green technology, sustainable living and environmental awareness by using the Union County Vocational-Technical Schools (UCVTS) campus in Scotch Plains, N.J., as a living laboratory. The curriculum was developed by UCVTS teachers and Honeywell experts on behalf of middle school educators throughout the U.S. and Canada to emphasize project-based learning, and offer tangible tools and materials for use in the classroom.
“The collaborative lesson plans offered during the week give us the resources and tools to bring the knowledge back to our local districts and incorporate it in the current curriculum,” said Sherry Brewer, 7th and 8th-grade language arts teacher, Locust Fork High School in Blount County, Ala. “It is my second year back to the campus, this time as an instructor, and I’m amazed at how the event is able to inspire and encourage teachers of all subjects.”
Green Boot Camp participants are covering a comprehensive set of topics ranging from green energy and greenhouse gas emissions to electric vehicles and the smart electrical grid.
For example, attendees are working on course materials to clearly articulate the principles of renewable energy by designing a solar house, and constructing a wind turbine and bicycle generator. In addition to the on-site instructors, Honeywell and UCVTS have also invited a host of special guest speakers who specialize in environmental and energy-related disciplines, such as rainwater conservation and building energy management.
“Green Boot Camp provides an interactive and informative atmosphere for teachers to explore different ways to bring sustainability and green technology alive in the classroom,” said Dr. Thomas Bistocchi, superintendent of UCVTS, which is regularly acknowledged for its progressive approach to learning and recently had three of its schools named in Newsweek’s “Best High Schools in America” list. “The innovative thinking and technology explored this week will enable schools to better prepare tomorrow’s students for green careers of the future.”
“Our objective is to equip teachers with the tools to get students excited about science and engineering, and enable them to understand sustainable practices that will positively affect their families, schools and communities,” said Paul Orzeske, president of Honeywell Building Solutions. “By teaming with a renowned institution like UCVTS, we are educating the next generation of green workers and building a foundation for environmental stewardship.”
“Green Boot Camp is helping educators engage their students in new sustainability concepts so young people can start to develop the skills, confidence, teamwork and leadership that are needed to address the challenges ahead,” said Union County Freeholder Christopher Hudak. “The Freeholder Board is proud to support UCVTS and Honeywell in this effort.”
Green Boot Camp is sponsored by Honeywell, and was created as part of an environmental partnership between UCVTS and Honeywell Hometown Solutions, the company’s corporate citizenship initiative. Hometown Solutions focuses on five areas: science and math education; family safety and security; housing and shelter; humanitarian relief; and habitat and conservation. Together with leading public and nonprofit institutions, Honeywell has developed powerful programs to address these needs in the communities it serves.
