BATTLE CREEK, MICH., October 16, 2017 – After steadily declining for over a decade, global hunger is on the rise again. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, an estimated 815 million people around the world are hungry and malnourished, especially those living in rural parts of the globe. Even here in the U.S., 85 percent of rural counties report persistent poverty – with many families living in these areas also suffering from food insecurity and childhood hunger.
On World Food Day, Kellogg Company and its global workforce are demonstrating their commitment to lead the global fight against hunger, with their hands, with their foods, and with a passion to feed children and families in need worldwide.
Their efforts are inspired by the Company’s Breakfasts for Better Days™ global signature cause. The goal of this initiative is to create 3 billion Better Days for people in need. Kellogg and its employees will accomplish this goal by volunteering at local food banks, working with nonprofit partners to help more kids in need have access to breakfast, donating food destined for disaster sites and hunger relief programs, and by supporting programs for smallholder and women farmers to help them increase yields and income.
Through Breakfasts for Better Days, Kellogg will engage its employees in 45,000 volunteer days, and aims to inspire 300 million people in the fight against hunger by the end of 2025.
“One in nine people around the world goes to bed hungry every night, yet we know there is enough food on this planet for everyone,” said Kris Charles, Senior Vice President, Global Corporate Affairs, Kellogg Company. “Hunger is preventable, and our company, employees and charity partners are working together to help meet the challenge of hunger in communities around the world.”
In honor of World Food Day, Kellogg employees are helping to fight hunger in a number of important ways throughout the world. For example:
- In Australia, our employees will host a food drive and will use the donations to pack hampers for a local food bank,
- In Ireland, community gardens are the focus for Kellogg employees, helping provide fresh produce to struggling families,
- In the U.S., we’re helping pack food for kids to have enough food when not in school, and
- In Mexico, our employees help distribute breakfast bags to children in need before school starts.
Kellogg works with partners who are equally committed to the cause of hunger, including some of the world’s leading hunger relief experts, such as Feeding America®.

In recent weeks, Kellogg has donated more than 41 million servings of cereals and snacks through Feeding America food banks, in support of multiple disaster relief efforts in the U.S., Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.
