NICB, IBHS: Do Your Homework Now To Avoid Contractor Fraud After A Hurricane

DES PLAINES, Ill., September 8, 2020 — The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) and the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) urge homeowners to continue hurricane preparedness actions as we approach the peak of hurricane season. The 2020 hurricane season has already set records for its active start, and recent forecast updates from NOAA continue to increase the projections for the number of named storms this year.

“Developing key partnerships with IBHS is critical for NICB as we continue to focus on educating consumers on the importance of being prepared for a storm,” said NICB President & CEO David Glawe.

“The roof is your first line of defense against a hurricanes’ wind and rain. HIRING A ROOFING CONTRACTOR?

• Call your insurance agent or company first if you believe your roof was damaged in a storm.
• Get more than one estimate. Never let a contractor pressure you into hiring them.
• Work with only licensed and insured contractors. Use the FORTIFIED directory to find a local FORTIFIED Roofer.
• Demand references and check them.
• Ask to see the salesperson’s driver’s license, write down the license number and their vehicle’s license plate number.
