New Survey Data Reveals Need for Cooking Oil Education
OAK BROOK TERRACE, ILLINOIS (February 1, 2012) /PRNewswire/ — Seventy-nine million Americans suffer from heart and blood vessel diseases,1 and yet, according to a new survey, 43 percent of respondents say they don’t worry about their cholesterol.2 That’s why, in honor of American Heart Month, Mazola and WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease have partnered to create the “Set a Healthier Table” program encouraging Americans to take a pledge to manage their families’ cholesterol.
For every person who takes the pledge at SetAHealthierTable.com, $1 will be donated to WomenHeart (up to $50,000) to encourage women to be screened for cholesterol and to help fund heart disease education and patient advocacy programs. “The Next Food Network Star” finalist, celebrity chef and personal trainer, Herb Mesa, will be the first to take the pledge.

A recently proposed health claim regulation by the FDA suggests that including about 2 g of plant sterols per day helps reduce total and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels, thereby lowering the risk of heart disease. And while 58 percent of Americans stated in a recent survey they believe corn oil is bad for you, corn oil is actually the cooking oil with the highest amount of plant sterols per serving.2,3
