Children International Receives Crisis Preparation and Response Humanitarian Award in Philippines Third Consecutive Year

Prestigious Hall of Fame Award Presented to Children International

Kansas City, MO (January 31, 2013) /PRNewswire/ — Children International – Philippines of the Bicol region has been awarded the Best Civil Society Organization on Humanitarian Assistance 2012 by The Republic of the Philippines National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. As a result of receiving the award for three consecutive years, Children International also received the prestigious Hall of Fame Award during a ceremony held at the Armed Forces of the Philippines General Headquarters, Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo, in Quezon City.

The 2012 award reads “for its exemplary passion and unparalleled support in providing child and youth centered-based Disaster Risk Reduction and Management programs and services thereby helping the children and their families to cope with the effects of disasters while contributing significantly to the empowerment of the Bicolanos for the development of a safe and well-prepared community during crisis situations.”

In addition to the Hall of Fame Award and the “Best Civil Society Organization on Humanitarian Assistance for 2012,” Agency Director Mr. Pio Salvador received special recognition for his “invaluable contribution in the field of disaster risk reduction and management.”

Over the years, Children International has implemented various disaster recovery efforts in the typhoon-prone country, ranging from relief operations, the provision of “child-friendly spaces” inside evacuation centers, disaster-preparedness training, and drills to providing permanent housing for families who were forced to resettle after their houses were buried under mudslides.

The Gawad KALASAG awards are the country’s premier annual awards for outstanding contribution in the fields of disaster risk reduction and management and humanitarian action. It is the principal mechanism by which the national Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council advances awareness of the best practices of DRRM and humanitarian response and assistance.

“We are honored to receive these awards,” said Jack McCanna, vice president of Children International’s Program Services. “Working in the Philippines since 1982, Children International has responded to help residents impacted by numerous typhoons and remains committed to helping residents prepare for and respond during times of crisis.”
